Designing the packaging for Joe Locke‘s new Motéma release “Lay Down My Heart” gave me the opportunity to work with NY photographer Joseph Boggess for the first time. And another easy and inspiring creative collaboration with a musician and his label.

based on a great piece of original artwork by Anmalo for the cover, this extended digipak (incl. slip case and booklet) completed the circle for me after having been involved in the concerts’ print and digital advertisement last year for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.

The Two of Them

A pleasant revisit of a 2008 package design we did for Christos Rafalides’ newly formed label Emarel Music was this one: “We Two”. An exciting collaboration between famous veteran Greek musician Mimis Plessas and the phenomenal vibes player and dear friend Christos Rafalides – a Greek in New York.

Wishing upon the star

This album was not on our radar. It was as an imminent release, but the design had never meant to be on our desk. But it came as it sometimes does: a close working relationship with the artist, simultaneous development of ideas and the fear of relinquishing control to an unknown party.

When I was first asked to work on the visuals for this new recording, a title had not even been found and as we were discussing a stylistic approach to its presentation, the project’s name evolved in parallel. Repeatedly, the notion of communication, connection, people interacting in life’s many different ways became the overarching theme of what vibes player, composer and co-band leader Joe Locke had in mind for this second release of The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group.

“Emergence” – The Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra

This is the second packaging done by nadworks for the TSYJO, Tommy Smith’s talent packed youth orchestra in Scotland.

Tommy is a dear friend who we’ve been working with since 2005 on creative projects across multiple channels — digital and web, merchandising products, above the line advertisement, PR and album design.

Lars Schurse is an up and coming German Bluegrass and Country+Western guitarist who is establishing himself as a versatile and genre crossing musician and teacher. This is his first release, out on German label Jazz Sick Records.

I have been writing in more detail about working on this project beyond the design on both web and print. In fact, creating the artwork for this album was almost the smallest part of the bigger picture – yet an important one. We did want to achieve a unique and uniform package with a true identity across all visual assets that made up this special recording.
